Biofilter emissions modelling

ORA were commissioned to undertake a desk study assessing potential odour dispersal and nitrogen deposition from a biological waste treatment facility in the South of England. The driver for this work was to enable the operator to better understand the environmental impact of their composting and MBT processes.
The study used reasoned assumptions regarding emissions from the plant, and scenarios were modelled based on the impact of the current facility and of projected extensions on selected receptors in the vicinity of the plant.
Various biofilter configurations were modelled, and optimum requirements were determined to ensure required exposure limits would not be exceeded at chosen receptors.
Validation of the assumptions used based on real monitoring and further modelling was recommended to support the results obtained.
